LAURIE MONBLATT

ARTIST PROFILE

The result of intense labor and an innovative eye, Monblatt’s work is an

expert fusion of materials that resemble a kind of mysterious ancient artifact.

Called "modern cave paintings" by her admirers, Monblatt’s pieces possess

an exciting tension between formal design elements and the primitive

qualities she utilizes to create a visually fascinating body of work. Monblatt’s

works can be interpreted as emerging wall sculptures, both aesthetically

beautiful and technically fascinating. The finished product hovers between

painting, sculpture, and paleontology, sometimes revealing pieces of

fossilization buried within a gouged surface, while at other times

demonstrating the patina and weathering of stone, all the while possessing a

quiet spirituality that lies at the heart of each piece.

Laurie Monblatt’s work is stunning and distinct in style. Her passion for the

process and her expert artist’s eye make her one of the most innovative

artists working today. Her work is owned by private collectors throughout the

United States.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

My current work is an inquiry into the painting process itself. Many layers of

pigment, varnish and various other materials are applied to and removed from a

work. I take my cue from the elements, where surface and depth merge with

nature's own aesthetic. Acknowledging the paradox of durability and ceaseless

change embodied in nature itself, I hope to create a visual landscape where

color and texture respond almost organically to shape and form. The passage of

time emerges as a formal and conceptual preoccupation of the work. The

repeated layering and removal of various pigment

types plays a vital role in developing this language. Continuous experimentation

with materials, allowing the properties of each to guide me to the next step has

always been part of my process. Deliberate mark making, accident and intuition

all come into play as a work is being crafted.  If one looks closely past the “skin”

of my paintings, they will discover the “bones” or history of what is beneath the

finished smooth surface. Some works contain up to 50 layers of past

applications. My compositions are minimal. In striving to create a balance

between the forces in a work, symmetry of design provides a peaceful

visual “wash” that unites these elements.
